How to sell your Crochet Afghans
With a few simple steps, you can turn your hobby into your career!
Here's some of the best ways to bring income in from your crochet afghans:
- Local bazaars and craft fairs
It's great to get out and meet people!
This is what you'll do at local bazaars and craft fairs. There's often people from different groups and backgrounds that are there to see the work you've done.
Get a booth and bring some of your best work to show. Be prepared with pricing and the possibility of haggling and giving people some deals off the ticket prices.
If you do customer crochet work, or customer afghans, even if you make no direct sales, this is a great place to network and get the word out about your product, face to face with the world.
- eBay
eBay is the traditoinal marketplace for reselling anything in the crafts and hobbies space.
Overall, it is a direct way to get lots of viewership to your products.
If, however, you are using popular free patterns available on the internet, it's likely that you'll see similar pattern work going and very low prices (due to the competitive nature of some ebay products).
Establishing a reputation is the best long term strategy on ebay - reputation is everything to buyers, and I know many that will pay 4 or 5 times more for a seller with a 99% reputation over one with an 80% reputation.
- Online classifides such as Kijiji & Craiglist
Kijiji and Craigslist are quickly becoming the most effective way to distribute your crochet afghans work.
Allowing you to focus on a local area is often the benefit here.
Look into placing adds in different categories saying that you're available for customer work - people looking for gifts or ideas will often stumble upon this and think to themselves "what a great gift idea!".
Keep in mind that Kijiji and Craigslist do not offer the same transaction ability that sites like eBay do - they often require the next step to be a phone call, email exchange, or meeting in person.
It's best to have a seperate email address and phone number in place for this (to keep away strangers from your main inbox) as well if you're meeting with strangers, either in their home or yours, ALWAYS take the proper precautions - even with people you think you can trust.
Often setting up a meeting in a well travelled, public place such as a coffee shop is safer than meeting in private.
There's a number of guides to safley dealing with craigslist and kijiji transactions available by searching through google.
